The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is just one place in this great country of ours you just have to go. I finally went in June. Originally I have to say I was drawn there by a sense of obligation rather then a sense of excitement and desire. You know there are things in life you are obligated to do and you know you should do them but they just don’t excite you. Eating fiber for instance.
The Grand Canyon is one of those places that you have been told about, seen on TV, Movies, magazine articles, blogs, literally millons of still pictures. I figured it would probably be pretty neat but one of those national lampoon vacation moments. You know, stop at a pull, get out of the car walk to the lookout and go. “Gee, what a big hole”, then get back in the car and continue on.
I was wrong.
Despite being one of the most photographed, publicized and oldest tourist attractions in the world, no one, including me, has been able to convey in a photograph the impressive and unexplainable feeling you get when see the canyon for the first time. It is impossible to explain the enormity and depth. Using “breathtaking” to describe it is a cliche but it fits perfectly.
This is a shot looking west from the east end of the canyon late in the day. You are actually looking through the window of the lookout tower gift shop.
So if you’re out west, make the Grand Canyon one of your destinations regardless of what you think you you’re going to see. You’ll be surprised.
